No doubt, choosing to have professional portraits taken is a significant undertaking. There are many photographers, and so many different approaches to portraiture, that it can be confusing. It is important to look at their work to make sure their approach meets your expectations and desires for your photographs.
I am an on-location, casual, natural light portrait photographer. I do not come to a photo session with an agenda. I prefer to let children act naturally, to let families relax and be themselves, to observe an event unfolding and capture it. As a result, my sessions are pretty free flowing.
Every child has a different personality and the goal of my photography is to capture that uniqueness. I have found things flow better when we come to a session with flexible expectations. The children may be silly or they may be more contemplative, either way they have a lot to offer. I will never force a smile, although I have been known to coax just a little.
I love working on-location using only natural light. I am drawn to how natural light brightens the eyes, gives shape and shadow to the face. I have also found that people tend to feel more comfortable in a natural setting, rather than on a backdrop. However there are many types of sessions that are more appropriate for the studio look. We will work together to determine the best approach to your session. Also don’t be surprised if I suggest we use your own home as the backdrop – wonderful pockets of beautiful light can be found almost anywhere.
